Creation - The Highest human function

What separates us from the animal kingdom?  Certainly we have incredibly defining physical needs - the need to eat, sleep, reproduce, and even play are shared throughout the species.  Monkeys and dolphins can even teach each other, passing knowledge from generation to generation.

Humans transcend the kingdom of animals through the act of creation.  When a human unleashes his creative force, he exerts his will upon reality itself.  His actions and visions come into existence, not from random acts of nature, but pure, concentrated will.  This is the highest order - the order of creation.  Of course, I'm not the first to have this thought.  Descartes ordered the world based upon the ability to create.  Humans have the ability to create physical objects, so there must be a higher order that can create living ones.  Thusly he justified God, but also he found the locus of order in the power of creation.

Creative energy is power.  It is pure power, awesome, magnificent, and wonderful.  The laws of nature are wonderful indeed, as is creation, but nothing is more magnificent than the glories of man.  We have made cities in the most inhospitable places, left the very environment that sustains us for the extremes of the deep ocean or the stars, all in the name of enduring creativity.

Not all creations are the product of such collaborative energy.  We can create as individuals in a limitless variety of mediums - paints, rocks, food, sound, words, light...  This is a short post, but, essentially, I implore everyone - if you are not creating something, you are not participating in the fullness of human existence.  Your life is merely animal.  Sure, you have primary needs, but you must work, sweat, and toil over something with meaning.  Mold nature to your preference.  Create the foods you enjoy.  Create the music you love.  Write the books you always wanted to read.  Cultivate the garden for the fresh vegetables you've always wanted.  Turn the raw into the refined.  Become human.
